It is the result of the collaboration between the artist Guo O Dong and the security firm Deep Instinct: The Persistence of Chaos project consists of a laptop that combines six software the most dangerous malware in recent years: Wannacry, BlackEnergy, ILOVEYOU, MyDoom, SoBig and DarkTequila.
These caused more than 95 billion dollars of damage, explains the project site on which the infected computer is the subject of an auction. Visible in a live video broadcast, the old 2008 Samsung netbook has recently surpassed a million dollars.
To avoid the dangers, all internet connection ports will be disabled when the device is sent to the person who won the auction. Security measures have also been taken to isolate the device from any network and to ensure that viruses can not be exploited by malicious people.
“This software seems so abstract, almost false with its funny and scary names, but I think they point out that the web and the IRL are not different spaces,” said the artist Guo O Dong to Motherboard.
Malware is one of the most tangible ways to blow up the internet and bite you. We came to understand this project as a bestiary, a catalog of historical threats, said Guo. It’s more exciting to see the beasts in a live environment.
